5 Things I Learned About Myself Through Sketching
Hey, it’s Black Heart here. I started sketching back in 2019, and honestly, I didn’t know it would end up teaching me so much about myself. At first, I just wanted to draw guns, random objects, and cool stuff I saw around me. But as time passed, sketching turned into more than just a hobby.
It became a mirror. A way to understand myself better. Every pencil stroke, every messy doodle, every failed attempt, it was all teaching me things about who I am and how I think.
Today, I want to share the 5 biggest lessons I learned about myself through sketching. Maybe you’ll see yourself in them, too.
1. I Learned That Patience Isn’t Optional
When I first started sketching, I was impatient. I wanted my art to look perfect on the first try. But guess what? It never did.
I realized patience is part of the process. You can’t rush a drawing. Shading takes time, lines need control, and sometimes you have to start over.
This taught me something bigger: I wasn’t naturally patient, but I could learn it. Sketching made me slow down, not just on paper but in life.
Tip for beginners: Start with simple shapes and build up slowly. Don’t pressure yourself to draw masterpieces. Trust me, patience grows with practice.
2. I Learned That Mistakes Aren’t Failures
In school, exams made mistakes feel like disasters. But in sketching? Mistakes turned into opportunities. A smudge could become a shadow. A wrong line could inspire a new idea.
Through sketching, I realized I wasn’t as “scared of failing” as I thought. I just needed a safe place to fail. And that made me more confident, both in art and in real life.
What I use: A kneaded eraser became my best friend. It doesn’t erase perfectly, but that’s the point, it reminds me mistakes are just part of the art.
3. I Learned That Creativity Is Already Inside Me
For a long time, I thought creativity was something “artists” had and I didn’t. But when I kept sketching, I realized creativity wasn’t about talent, it was about practice.
Even the small doodles I made in the corners of my notebooks showed me I had ideas inside me. Sketching just unlocked them.
Now, I use that creativity in other areas too, like game development. Sketching gave me confidence that I could create something original, not just copy what I saw.
4. I Learned That Art Helps Me Handle Stress
During exams and college assignments, I often felt overwhelmed. But every time I picked up a pencil, my stress went down.
Sketching taught me that I need creative breaks to stay sane. I didn’t know this about myself before. Now, I plan little sketching sessions during busy weeks to reset my brain.
Pro tip: If you’re stressed, sketch something super simple, even circles or random lines. It doesn’t have to look like anything. The act of sketching itself is therapy.
5. I Learned That Growth Is Slow, But Real
When I look at my old sketches from 2019, I laugh. They’re messy, unbalanced, and awkward. But they’re also proof of growth.
I realized I’m not someone who changes overnight. I grow slowly, step by step. And that’s okay. Sketching gave me proof that with time, I really can improve at anything.
This lesson hit me hard: if I can grow in sketching, I can grow in life, career, relationships, everything.
Final Thoughts
Sketching has been more than an art skill for me; it’s been a teacher. It taught me patience, resilience, creativity, stress management, and the truth about growth.
If you’re just starting your sketching journey, don’t think of it only as “drawing.” Think of it as a way to discover yourself.
And who knows? You might end up learning lessons about yourself that go way beyond the page.
